WHAT: Beginning in March 2008, SkyLine is accepting applications for a special youth-oriented Summer Leadership Program through the Cooperative Council of North Carolina. Usually, Council sponsors a weeklong youth leadership program at White Lake in a traditional camp environment, but due to a national conference scheduled in North Carolina, the program’s focus will shift to coincide with this national event, which is set to take place in Asheville.
WHEN: The Summer Leadership Program is scheduled from July 26 through 30.
WHERE: The Summer Leadership Program is held at the University of North Carolina at Asheville in conjunction with the National Institute on Cooperative Education (NICE). The NICE program provides an exciting week of fun, fellowship and co-op leadership opportunities filled with dynamic speakers, computer simulation exercises, hands-on cooperative education and educational games and activities.
PARTICIPANT SELECTION: In the past, a limited number of N.C. representatives to NICE have been selected from participants at Co-op Camp at White Lake. This year, all youth sponsored by Council members (including SkyLine) will have the opportunity to participate in the NICE program at UNC-Asheville.
Participants at the NICE Conference also will be eligible to apply for the Jim Graham Cooperative Leadership College Scholarship, worth $1,000. For this year’s program, only rising high school juniors or seniors who are children of SkyLine or SkyBest telephone service customers can apply for the conference sponsorships. (Applicants must be must be at least 16 years old at the time of the Conference.) Up to 10 students will be selected to attend.
