Youth Tour Program
About the Program:
SkyLine Membership Corporation sponsors annually a high school junior to be one of the 100 students to attend the Foundation for Rural Service Youth Tour held in Washington, D.C. This five-day program usually held during the first week of June each year, gives participants a first-hand look at the telecommunications industry and the legislative process by visiting Congress, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and other government agencies. Touring includes famous landmarks such as the Washington Monument, Smithsonian Institution, Jefferson and Lincoln memorials, U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, Washington Cathedral and the U.S. Supreme Court. Lots of fun activities supplement the tour, including a visit to the National Zoo, a night tour of the city, a pizza party and a youth dance.

Eligibility and Requirements:
 
     » student's parents must be SkyLine members of at least one and family must reside full-time in SkyLine's service area;
     » be a junior at a public high school in the co-op's five-county service area (Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Watauga or Johnson (TN);
     » write a letter of application, why you would like to attend including future plans beyond high school;
     » submit a 500-word essay on one of three selected topics;
     » have a minimum 3.25 grade-point-average (GPA);
 »
obtain a letter of recommendation from a teacher or school official;
 »
exhibit demonstrated leadership in campus organizations;
 »
exhibit demonstrated community involvement through volunteer activities;
 »
Recent school photo to be used for publication. (please do not attach using staples or paper clips.)

Transportation Arrangements:
In addition to full sponsorship of the tour for one student, SkyLine will pay the airfare to and from Washington, D.C. Additionally, the cooperative will provide $75 to the participant to cover incidental expenses during his or her trip to Washington, D.C.
